Oral Cancer Detection and Screening

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of oral lesions, red and white patches, ulcers, oral submucous fibrosis, oral premalignant lesions, oral cancer.

Any type of ulcer or lesion that persists in the oral cavity for more than two weeks or is not responding to treatments is a warning signal.

Teeth with sharp edges causing constant irritation to tongue and oral epithelium is the cause of frequent ulcers which gradually can transform into oral cancer

Under the expert guidance of Dr Nidhi Agarwal , specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, we perform all types of advanced diagnostic procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of premalignant lesions, jaw swellings, salivary gland tumors and jaw tumors.

  • At Om Orthodontic And Dental Implant Center and St’ Joseph Hospital Gomti Nagar Lucknow, we perform non invasive brush biopsy and Fine needle aspiration cytology for suspicious lesions. We also perform biopsy of oral tissue to rule out the suspicion of malignancy and for confirmatory diagnosis.
  • The incidence of oral cancer in India has increased over the last 50 years.
  • Sixth most common cancer world wide and represents about 5.5% of all malignancies.
  • Over 90% of all oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas [SCC] arising from lining mucosa.
  • Most common cancer in males and third common in females
  • This can be completely prevented by simple changes in lifestyle and regular screening and even have health benefits that reach beyond cancer.
  • 5-20% of oral leucoplakia will turn malignant
  • 10-20% of submucous fibrosis will turn malignant
  • People who have habit of smoking, paan masala and gutka chewing along with alcohol consumption are at higher risks of getting oral cancer along with genetic factors.

With the prevelance of paan, gutka chewing and smoking in North India which leads to various types of oral cancers and oral submucous fibrosis. We provide the advanced treatment of all types of oral lesions.

We provide the following facilities at our center

  • Aadvanced equipments for diagnosis of Oral & Maxillofacial Precancerous lesions like brush biopsy, fine needle aspiration cytology, vital staining.
  • Histopathological diagnosis of Oral Cancer and Precancerous Lesions
  • Histopathology and treatment of Salivary gland tumors, Odontogenic cysts and Vesicobullous lesions
  • Immunohistochemistry, PCR, Genetic studies in diagnosis of oral lesions/ malignant tumors
  • Forensic Odontology and investigations

Remember : Early Diagnosis is half battle won so get yourself screened….

  • Vital Staining
  • Exfoliative Cytology (Scraping)/ Brush cytology
  • FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology)
  • Biopsy
  • Immunohistichemistry for advanced diagnostic procedures

Oral Brush Cytology

  • Sensitivity > 96%”
  • Uses a special brush to collect epithelial cells
  • Brush is placed in contact with oral epithelium and rotated with firm pressure 5-10 times
  • Brush collects cells from all 3 layers of the epithelium: (1) the basal, (2) intermediate, and (3) superficial layers
  • Cellular material on brush is transferred to a glass slide and flooded with fixative
  • Dry slide sent to pathologist to view with computer assisted analysis
  • Results: negative, positive, atypical
  • “Positive” and “atypical” results require scalpel biopsy to characterize the lesion completely
  • May be a good tool for “monitoring” patients with chronic mucosal changes, such as leukoplakia, lichen planus, post-irradiation, and patients with a history of oral cancer who require long-term surveillance of their ongoing mucosal changes
Cytology brush cytology: Brush used to scrape the lesions and collect altered cells
Oral cytological smear showing malignant cells

Removal of tissue from living beings for macroscopic examination ,microscopic analysis, bacterial analysis & combination of above is called “BIOPSY”.

Indications for Biopsy

  • Any lesion that persists for more than 2 weeks with no apparent cause
  • Any inflammatory lesion that does not respond to local treatment after 10-14 days (after removing local irritant)
  • Persistent hyperkeratotic changes in surface tissues
  • Any persistent tumescence, either visible or palpable beneath relatively normal tissue
  • Inflammatory changes of unknown cause that persist for long periods
  • Lesions that interfere with local function (e.g. fibroma)
  • Bone lesions not specifically identified by clinical and radiographic findings
  • Any lesion that has the characteristics of malignancy
  • Any tissue expelled from the body orifice
  • To rule out malignant transformation
